Update on the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Saint Anthony Hospital (SAH) continues to work with the Illinois Department of Public Health and Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Coronavirus (COVID-19) response. For more detailed information on the status of the virus and risk level, please visit IDPH or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Measures SAH has taken to prevent transmission of the virus

Enhanced screening of patients is being done at hospital entrances such as clinics and Emergency Department.

There is a new COVID-19 and Acute Respiratory illness triage and clinical pathway in place in the Emergency Department called C.A.R.E.triage, where:

  • Patients are screened for COVID-19 symptoms in an area designated for this purpose and separate from others
  • Patients Under Investigation (PUIs) for COVID-19 are assessed and, if met the criteria, are given a viral test.
  • All PUIs are processed in a separate, safe and comfortable area.

Other elements of our COVID-19 response:

  • Clear, visible and bilingual signage is posted at all entrances.
  • Our trained and knowledgeable staff will expedite triage of suspect cases in a safe way.
  • Visiting restrictions temporarily in place.  See visitor information here.

These temporary measures are in place until further notice so please bear with us.

These interventions are meant to keep patients, families and health care workers safe. We will continue to treat patients with any condition with the same compassionate and high-quality care.

Our focus is patient-centered care which goes a long way to ensure we provide the highest quality of healthcare in a safe manner. We at Saint Anthony Hospital are fully prepared for any contingency.

Our infection control department is in frequent and regular contact with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) for situational updates on COVID-19 and revises our preparedness accordingly. At this time, IDPH states that the risk to Americans is low.

If you:

  • Have been outside Chicago in the last two weeks OR
  • Know someone who may have COVID-19 AND
  • Have a clinic appointment or need to come to our hospital
    AND
have any of the following symptoms:
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

How to protect yourself:

Stay home and leave only if absolutely necessary.

Practice social distancing by staying at least six feet away from others.

Avoid crowded places and public gatherings.

Do not share personal items such as razors, towels, brushes, etc.

Wipe down high touch surfaces such as door handles, keyboards, cell phones, in your home.

Hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of infections

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Remember to wash your hands:

  • When entering or leaving the hospital and clinical areas
  • Before eating or drinking
  • After using the washroom
  • If your hands become visibly dirty

What to do if you are sick:

  • Stay home: People who are mildly ill with COVID-19 are able to recover at home. Do not leave, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas.
  • Call before you get medical care. Be sure to get care if you feel worse or you think it is an emergency.
  • Avoid using public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.
  • Self-isolate yourself at home.
  • Where possible, stay in a dedicated “sick room” and away from other people in your home.
  • Use a separate bathroom, if available. If a separate bathroom is unavailable, make sure the bathroom is wiped down with a household disinfectant before use by others.
  • Restrict contact with pets and other animals, just like you would around other people.
  • If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with them.
